Meeting highlights:

YB Nik Nazmi expressed appreciation to the plastics industry in driving sustainability and for closely supporting NRES in the development of national plastics policies and the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) meetings

NRES and industry need to work together to drive waste separation at source (SAS), product design, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and deposit refund system (DRS), amongst other initiatives

NRES is interested in DRS and invited the industry to jointly investigate the system to enhance plastics collection and recycling

NRES shall increase engagement with the industry on the issue of importation of plastics waste, in particular the Basel Convention, to ensure sustainable plastics recycling in the country

Industry will be engaged in the work to harmonise national plastics policies in the near future

As Malaysia is chairing ASEAN in 2025, NRES looks forward to collaborate with the ASEAN Federation of Plastics Industries (AFPI) to showcase and improve plastics sustainability within the region
